little gear comparison

Fuji X-T5, GFX 100 II, Leica SL3, Sony A7RV, Hasselblad X2D 100C

 

this is, of course, not a proper comparison test.
i was simply curious to see how different cameras render two typical scenes using classic portrait lenses.
one indoors – my beloved donald, on the kitchen island.
one outdoors – the cactus on the terrace table.

the cigarette pack was moved several times.
the idea was to observe the fall-off in sharpness through the lettering and the brilliance of the plastic wrapping.
that didn’t work out quite as clearly as i had hoped.

still, i didn’t want to withhold the results from you.
the images are unedited, using standard color profiles.
i exported them from lightroom at 5000 pixels wide, 100%.

 

Fuji X-T5, Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 (captured 1.4)

so for the price, a wonderful result.
great sharpness, beautiful falloff.
the bokeh, personally, feels a bit too “streaky” for my taste. but again, a bargain!

 

Fuji GFX 100 II, GF 80mm f/1.7

even better for portraits, i think.
the sharpness feels less “digital” compared to the x-t5 with the viltrox,
the bokeh has a dreamy quality to it.

 

Leica SL3, 75mm Noctilux M f/1.25

for me, the winner in bokeh.
and – as they always say – the leica micro-contrast is sharp, but never too sharp.
it feels very real.

 

Sony A7RV, 135mm GM f/1.8

i made two mistakes while shooting. the first photo was shot at iso 640 by accident. i also struggled to match the framing.

the colors don’t pop straight out of camera –
but that doesn’t really matter.
you’ll edit it just like i do.

still, it’s missing a bit of that magic.
at least, that’s how it feels to me.

 

Hasselblad X2D 100C, 90mm XCD90V f/2.5

i'm quite amazed by what this lens delivers at f/2.5.

a barely noticeable transition from sharpness to blur, a very natural image, beautiful colors.

 

i’ll prepare a download gallery for you,
as squarespace compresses and resizes everything here.

which lens rendering do you like best?
i’m pleasantly surprised by the hasselblad 2.5 – the fall-off is beautiful.
the 135mm from sony, a lens i usually love, feels a bit too clinical here.

subjectively, i think i like the noctilux best.
though the two fujis are excellent, too.
and the x-t5 with the viltrox lens clearly wins for me in terms of value.
